Replacing spark plugs is not difficult, if they are located in a place on your engine block where you have enough room to reach them with a socket wrench. I usually start by taking out the first plug on the left side of the engine block. The spark plug wire is carefully removed. Then I put the socket wrench over the spark plug and turn the wrench counter clockwise until the plug comes loose.
You should buy an air pressure gauge. Spend a few dollars and pick one up at your local auto parts store near me or in the automotive section of a department store. Most gas stations and all tire dealers have one that they might let you borrow.
If you insist on street racing anyway, you can call the local auto store near me so that they can direct you to a track that allows this kind of racing. This is a controlled way to race the people that you may have met on the road and want to see who is faster. You will be able to have fun and stay safe at the same time. Most of these kinds of races are monitored and have an ambulance standing by in case of the worst happening. Best of all you aren't going to get arrested fro racing!!
Ok, now that I've scared the be-gee-bers out of you, if doing it yourself is still your goal, do your research. Get a Chilton's manual, or a Hayes manual for your specific car. Make sure you have the appropriate tools for the job and understand the proper steps to accomplish the job.
The ZD30 engine has suffered a poor reputation for premature failures including melting/cracking pistons and overboosting, largely due to some common issues. These engines run a variable vain turbocharger with boost controlled by the ECU, and to meet stringent european emission standards run an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system. Running fairly high boost levels from factory causes the ZD30 to be a heavy breathing engine and oil vapour is forced into the inlet tract contaminating the Mass Air Flow sensor (MAF), working its way through the intercooler and into the inlet manifold. The EGR system can turn this oil vapour into a thick tar like consistency, blocking inlet runners, which in turn can lead to some cylinders running rich and some lean, resulting in melted pistons...
One of the last things I replaced on the car from the auto parts near me, was a new set of distributor wires going to each of the 4 spark plugs. It had been running rough even with new spark plugs, so I hoped the new spark plug wires would solve the problem. I had been taking regular drives into the country side, over some fairly steep mountain roads. This put added strain on the engine, and very likely brought about the end sooner. I thought the car was running smoother, with the new parts just installed. It seemed to have more power and to be doing better going up and down the steep mountain roads.
nearest auto parts near me will last you three to five years. Make sure it's kept clean of corrosion, and have it checked for power at three years old. Many auto parts stores will check it for you, just make sure you are standing right there as they do.
